our heritage
In 1968, a collective of pioneering crab and lobster fishermen from the South West of the UK came together to form 'South Devon Shellfishermen'. These fishermen, who learned their craft from the generations that came before them, were pioneering innovators who changed the face of shellfishing forever.
In 2018, our Assocation turned 50. To mark the pasing of half a century, we have put together a snapshot of out heritage - a collection of short films and photograpahs documenting the changes in shellfishing practice experienced over a generation. To ensure that our heritage is preserved and celebrated, we partnered with community interest company Storylines, who specialise in presenting peoples experiences in an accessible way. Funded by a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, together, we have been working on a project to showcase the individual stories of experienced shellfishermen.
Across these pages and in our flickr albums we hope to show you a snapshot of our heritage, through a selection of photographs and audio which were collected during our 50th year; bear with us, we still have a lot of organising to do! The full audio of the interviews and copies of the photographs have been archived with various institutions across the South West, so if you have a special interest in learning more, please let us know and we can point you in the right direction.
All of the photographs across our galleries and in our films have been generously donated from private collections. Please respect the owners of the photographs by not reproducing them without our written consent.

'guardians of the reef' - The project''Those alive today still remember the days of horse and carts transporting crab; huers on clifftops; and tarring clothes before setting to sea. They remember men who went blind in the War but still managed, with a little help, to weave the crab pots. They remember transporting their crab catches by train packed in wooden tea chests and apple barrels. They remember the hard, hand to mouth days of life in the rural South West''.
‘Guardians of the Reef’ worked to uncover and share stories of shellfishing in South Devon through a series of heritage events, exhibitions and film screenings. Delivered in partnership between Storylines and South Devon and Channel Shellfishermen, in 2017/18 the project is conducting a series of oral history interviews with shellfishermen, many whose families have fished for generations, transforming these into a series of digital stories, films and displays. Thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Guardians of the Reef documents this unique and largely unrecorded part of coastal heritage. Supported by Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum and Salcombe Maritime Museum, in Autumn 2017, the project ran 6 heritage collection events in the South Hams area focused on gathering oral histories, photographs and artefacts, which resulted in a rich archive of material - a snapshot of which appears in a series of short films, which are available online. The full recordings and other material is archived with Devon County Archives, Devon Rural Archives, Salcombe Museum and the Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum. |
